Outdoor maternity sessions feel so natural and they embrace the season when your baby will be born

This couple chose to have their maternity photo session at the Arnold Arboretum, in Boston, because they lived very close by, and had beautiful memories of enjoying the Arboretum together. They loved its beauty and peacefulness, and I was so thrilled that this was their choice, because I love the many different, and lovely, spots available to us for photographs.

We met there on a summer late afternoon, and started by walking into a richly green area, with shade and the most beautiful trees and plants. The sun gently setting behind the couple gave us an ethereal quality to the images, and a lovely golden glow.

After spending some time taking photos there, we took a short walk over to a grassy area, for a different feel, a new setting, still within the Arboretum, which gave variety to the images we could create. There are endless possible photo spots in the Arnold Arboretum, and by knowing the options, I could suggest a few areas that I knew would be great for photographing their maternity session.

Remembering to keep everyone comfortable outside

I also took into consideration the distance between the areas we chose, remembering how I felt walking when I was very pregnant! These practical considerations are so important in planning a photography session that is comfortable and enjoyable for families. I never want to have clients needing to walk too far, especially if it’s a warm summer day.

Another thing I think about is whether it will be buggy where we’ll be having our photo session. It’s so important that I know the area well, so I can let my clients know to be prepared with insect repellent, sunscreen, or anything else they might need to be comfortable and safe. If I don’t already know an area, I always go there ahead of a session, at the same time of day, to know what to expect on our session day.

Such a beautiful and sweet evening, reflecting on and celebrating the new baby they would soon hold in their arms. What an honor to be able to give this couple photos that will always bring them back to the anticipation, excitement, and love they felt on that summer night.

Hi, I’m Beth!

I photograph families who want more than a
smiling-at-the-camera moment. My sessions are
designed to feel easy and connected -
especially for moms who do it all and want to be
in the frame for once. What you’ll walk away with
are photos that feel honest, artful, and full of the
warmth you never want to forget.
